How are you?

"How are you?" although this phrase is on number 1 speed dial in my work vocab it is still a valid question. In my job asking this question and acting like you care is a daunting task a times. However; I feel that if I can at least ask the question with a decent tone of voice, it shouldn't be that hard for the person asked to give a valid, ANY valid, reply to this question.

Although I find this extremely rude, I believe that I understand why consumers today can not respond to these simple 3 words. It so happens that possibly as much as half of the retail workers in these United States no longer know how to ask the question, thus surly can not respond to it themselves when asked. Of course if so many can not ask to begin with than that must mean that people are actually out of practice in answering such a silly question. It simply breaks down to a time issue, apparently it takes to long to process this question and reply, even with a simple o.k. If everyone could take 5 seconds and give every person big or small the time of day I believe that many service problems will decrease and I may actually be able to tip wait staff without feeling like s/he should owe me money for time lost while waiting on a refills for 20 minutes while my mouth burns off from the peppers on the pizza.

No one seems to remember the Golden Rule these days, if you don't, Google it.

By the way, I'm doing alright.... and yourself?
